The Teachers without Borders Initiative, of Education for girls, is an important one. In Syria there are 4.8 million school aged children and 2.2 million of them are not going to school (UNICEF), and there are more than half a million Syrian children not in school outside of Syria.More than half of these children are girls.  It is difficult to imagine…

The Literacy rate for females over 15 is 81% as opposed to males which is 91. The percentage of males to females is close to even, so the numbers are not good and with the war the percentages are dropping as girls are not attending school as much.

Girls in Syria have to fight for equality and access, and the amount of opportunities for girls has dropped. Parents are again marrying their daughters younger so that they have a chance at survival and in the hope that this will give them more opportunities. We have a culture that is ,due to the war, now reversing itself through history. Girls in Syria need help to rise above the circumstances of the war.

The Learning Space that I have designed is a “Space within a Space”

Mission:

To develop a safe, supportive and empowering space for girls in the Zaatari Refugee Hub.

A Space which:

  1. Enhances emotional wellbeing and resilience
  2. Engages girls in growing/producing/achieving/participating as a method of developing skills for the future.
  3. Helps to develop the whole human being and use circumstances in a positive way to grow
  4. Is mobile, flexible and adaptable to the needs of the students.

Vision:

To develop a sense of purpose for the students beyond their current existence

To promote hope for a better life

To help create industry and work towards helping to build an economy

To bond, interact with others and share experiences in order to develop a sense of community

To create a space and skills that will contribute to the life of the community, economically and socially.
